Lugia Plushie by Fenmar Lugia Plushie by Fenmar
After reading some papers on developable surfaces and unwrapping algorithms I came up with a new approach to pattern making. So I gave it a try and it turned out perfectly.

So here it is: My very own lugia plushie

So I know we can't have the pattern (and I completely understand!) but I'm curious as to what this new approach was.

Basically it's making a digital 3d model and use existing unwrapping algorithms (used for UV unwrapping to apply textures to a model) to get the pattern. You have to make sure to use a shape preserving, low shear parameterization, but the build-in functions of Blender work pretty well.

You still need to know where to place the seams for the best results, but you can play around with seams and look how it changes the pattern before physically making the plushie.

You can also have a look at this paper: [link] , but I do not recommend to use a fully automatic approach for pattern generation, because it does not detect symmetry of shapes so the seams are sometimes right across the face and this looks ugly :)

I hope this helps, if you have more questions you can always ask ;)

Woah, that's really smart! I'll have to make a model for one of my characters and then try it out :3 I'll ask if anything weird happens xD

I'm sorry but I want it to stay unique, so I won't release the pattern.
